NHS: Developing System Leaders

North Central London ICB developed 184 system leaders to drive integrated care across five boroughs. Achieving 94% satisfaction and 100% skills application, the programme fostered cross-sector collaboration that continues to strengthen patient-centred care for over 1.6 million people.

When North Central London Integrated Care Board began advancing its Integrated Care System vision, it recognised that delivering truly joined-up care across five boroughs would require a shift in how leaders think and operate. Serving over 1.6 million people, the move toward deeper collaboration across NHS organisations, local authorities and the voluntary sector called for stronger system-wide leadership capability.

Partnering with First Ascent, NCL ICB launched a tailored Systems Leadership Development Programme to equip operational managers, clinical leads and emerging influencers with the mindset and tools to lead beyond organisational boundaries. Combining psychometric insight, cross-sector learning and practical application, the programme strengthened self-awareness, built trust across sectors and enabled leaders to navigate complexity with confidence.

Over two years, 184 leaders were developed, with 94% satisfaction and clear evidence of sustained behaviour change and organisational impact. A thriving alumni network and embedded systems thinking now support more collaborative, informed decision-making across the ICS.
